Joyce Hatchett is genuinely a working artist. Arriving in Western Australia as a 7 year old from her native Scotland, Joyce already had paint in her veins, and by 11, she was taking lessons in oil painting. With a firm intent to create, Joyce threw herself at a broad range of creative pursuits, and in the visual arts, one of the hallmarks of Joyce's practice is still the range of things she does.
This is not an artist who can be easily pigeonholed. Currently Joyce is running her own studio/working gallery, Hatchett Gallery, in Wellington Mill in the Ferguson Valley and working extremely hard on a new series Amidst the Bush. Hard work and a willingness to commit her artistic skills to any valuable purpose are also defining attributes of this artist. With a gallery of her own, requiring ongoing maintenance and attendance there whenever it is open, it seems many would consider their hands full.
Joyce sees her art as a means to engage with her community, so it is often a way that she reaches out. Regular donations of Hatchett artwork find their way onto auction blocks or charity walls, and progress is made for a raft of charitable projects across the South West. Joyce has engaged with other players in her community, restoring the stations of the cross in the Dardanup Catholic Church, and turning her hand to restoration of a number of local, aging statues. When the Dardanup Community included an Art Exhibition in their Bull and Barrel festival, it was Joyce who stepped up to coordinate it from an artists point of view.
While Hatchett Gallery, and providing it with a consistent flow of work, continues to be the most important part of Joyce's work, she will never restrict herself to things she's already done. She has recently produce her first album cover for a local band, and gives talks and education regarding her life as an artist and poet. Joyce Hatchett can lay claim to being a successful, hardworking artistic part of the South West community.
Joyce adores vibrant colours and diversity and is receiving recognition for this and for accepting challenging commissions. Her works can currently be viewed in the Hatchett Gallery, St Aidan Winery, Ferguson Falls Winery, Dardanup Tourist Bureau and the Dardanup Tavern. She has attained Australia-wide exposure through the magazine Vital.
